Prince's Trust Australia is honouring Australian Defence Force veteran and family entrepreneurs through the 2023 Beyond Service Awards, with warm thanks to our major sponsor, the Commonwealth Bank.

Power of One Award

Recognising the outstanding efforts of an individual that works on their own.

New Mission Award

This award recognises the best application of military skills, experience and/or networks developed in service to the Australian Defence Force and applied to a civilian business(es).

This award recognises the outstanding efforts of Australian Defence Force family business owners and entrepreneurs. The award is open to partners and spouses of current and former serving Australian Defence Force personnel.

COMMUNITY IMPACT award

This award recognises veteran or Australian Defence Force partners and spouses making a positive impact in the community and/or contributing to a more sustainable society through their business(es).

Australian Defence Force veterans and partners are encouraged to self-nominate or nominate a colleague. Please align your nomination to one of the four available categories outlined above. You may self-nominate or nominate a colleague for multiple awards.

There is no cost associated with nominating for an Award.

Judges will assess each nomination and supporting evidence against the relevant criteria. Each category is assessed by an independent and impartial judging panel.

Finalists will be announced virtually in September 2023.

Award winners will be announced in person at a celebration in Sydney in October 2023.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be considered for an award, the individual or organisation must meet all the eligibility requirements for each category as provided below.

For the purpose of these terms and conditions, the following definitions apply:

Private Sector Organisation is a business that is:

  • Registered in Australia
  • Has been operating in Australia for at least 6 months, and
  • Has an Australian Business Number that has been active for at least 6 months on the closing date for nominations.

Public Sector Organisation includes:

  • Organisations registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission; or
  • Higher education institutions recognised under the Higher Education Support Act 2003.

A Sole Trader is a business that is:

  • An individual running a business; and
  • The individual is the only owner; and
  • The individual controls and manages the business.
  • Registered in Australia;  
  • Has been operating in Australia for at least 6 months
  • Has an Australian Business Number that has been active for at least 6 months on the closing date of the nominations; and
  • Registered for GST if GST turnover is $75,000 or more.

A Company, for the purposes of the Awards, is a business that is:

  • A legal entity established in Australia run by directors and owned by Australian shareholders;
  • Includes directors each of whom has a Director Identification Number;
  • Regulated by ASIC, the Australian Securities & Investments Commission;
  • Has a tax file number;
  • Has an Australian Business Number that has been active for at least 6 months on the closing date of nominations; and Registered for GST if GST turnover is $75,000 or more

A Partnership is a business that is:

  • A group or association of people who carry on a business and distribute income or losses between themselves;
  • Has a tax file number;
  • Has an Australian Business Number that has been active for at least 6 months on the closing date of nominations; and
  • Registered for GST if GST turnover is $75,000 or more

A Trust is a business that:

  • Is established by a formal trust deed that imposes an obligation on a person, the trustee, to hold property or assets (e.g., business assets) for the benefit of others (known as beneficiaries);
  • Has a tax file number;
  • The Trustee has an Australian Business Number that has been active (in relation to that business) for at least 6 months of the closing date of nominations; and
  • Registered for GST if GST turnover is $75,000 or more

Non-employing business is a business that:

  • Includes sole traders, companies, and partnerships without employees (with exception of the business owner).

A Micro-business is a business that:

  • Employs between 1 and 4 people including non-employing businesses;
  • Total business revenue of less than $2 million per annum.

A Small business is a business that:

  • Employs between 5 and 19 employees;
  • Total business revenue between $2 million and $10 million per annum.

An employee is:

  • A person hired as an individual;
  • Has a working agreement or contract with your business.
  • Apprentices, trainees, labourers, and trade assistants are treated as employees.

Use the Australian Tax Office Employee or contractor decision tool to work out if your worker is an employee or contractor.

  1. The Power of One Award

The intention of this award is to recognise the efforts of an individual that works on their own.

Open to non-employing businesses and public sector organisations (sole traders, companies, trusts and public sector organisations without employees. This category excludes partnerships).

To be eligible for this award, the applicant must also meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia  
  • Be 18 years of age or over  
  • Own or operate an eligible business outlined above
  • Have served at least one day of full time service in the Australian Defence Force, or must be a de facto partner, in a registered relationship with, or legally married spouse of a current or former serving Australian Defence Force member (who has served at least one day of full time service in the Australian Defence Force).

  1. The New Mission Award

The intention of this award is to recognise the application of skills, experience and/or networks developed in service to the Australian Defence Force to a business(es).

Open to non-employing businesses (sole traders, companies, trusts, and partnerships without employees), micro-businesses, small businesses and public sector organisations.

To be eligible for this award, the applicant must also meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia  
  • Be 18 years of age or over  
  • Own or operate (solely or jointly) an eligible business outlined above
  • Have served at least one day of full time service in the Australian Defence Force, or must be a de facto partner, in a registered relationship with, or legally married spouse of a current or former serving Australian Defence Force member (who has served at least one day of full time service in the Australian Defence Force).

  1. Community Impact Award

The intention of this award is to recognise veteran and ADF family members making a positive impact in the community and/or contributing to a more sustainable society through their business(es).

Open to non-employing businesses (sole traders, companies, trusts and partnerships without employees), micro-businesses, small businesses and public sector organisations.

To be eligible for this award, the applicant must also meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia  
  • Be 18 years of age or over  
  • Own or operate (solely or jointly) an eligible business outlined above
  • Have served at least one day of full time service in the Australian Defence Force, or must be a de facto partner, in a registered relationship with, or legally married spouse of a current or former serving Australian Defence Force member (who has served at least one day of full time service in the Australian Defence Force).

  1. Defence Family Business Award

The intention of this award is to recognise ADF partners and spouses in business(es).

Open to non-employing businesses (sole traders, companies, trusts and partnerships without employees), micro-businesses, small businesses and public sector organisations.

To be eligible for this award, the applicant must also meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia  
  • Be 18 years of age or over  
  • Own or operate an eligible business outlined above (solely or jointly)
  • Must be a de facto partner, in a registered relationship with, or legally married spouse of a current or former serving Australian Defence Force member (who has served at least one day of full time service in the Australian Defence Force).

  1. Commonwealth Bank of Australia Business of the Year Award

This category is not open to public nomination. The winner will be selected by the judging panel from the pool of nominees from all Beyond Service Awards categories.
