Construction begins at The Prince’s Terrace Adelaide

After being officially launched by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, last year, construction is now well underway on The Prince’s Terrace Adelaide, bringing more than 230 jobs to the region of Bowden, South Australia.

The project, which was the first residential project to receive a 6 Star Green Star Design rating from the Green Building Council of Australia, is stimulating the local economy by committing to sourcing local trades and supplies.

Adelaide-based award winning conservation and restoration company, Heritage Stone Restorations (HSR), was granted the contract to carve The Prince’s Feathers—a legacy from His Royal Highness. The contract will see senior mason, Ian Murray, carve The Prince’s Feathers out of sandstone.

‘It’s great to see an artisan trade such as stone masonry being considered for such a significant urban renewal project’, said Mr Murray, who will spend 240 hours hand carving The Prince’s Feathers before the project’s launch next year.

The Prince’s Terrace Adelaide is a unique collaboration between The Prince’s Foundation for Building Community, The Prince’s Charities Australia, Renewal SA and Defence Housing Australia. Representatives from all organisation have met with HSR and received a demonstration of stone carving.

‘We’re a 6 Star project, but we also have a 6 Star team—we have great partners in Defence Housing Australia and Renewal SA, but we also have fantastic local contractors on board including Historic Stone Restorations,’ said Dominic Richards, Trustee of the Prince’s Charities Australia.

The Prince’s Terrace Adelaide will feature a mix of eight terraces and four apartments built as mews behind the terraces—a reflection of the areas architectural legacy. The homes have a strong focus on sustainable design and are predicted to use 50 per cent less water and 50 per cent less energy than a typical townhouse.

‘The Prince’s Terrace Adelaide is setting the benchmark in environmentally sustainable design to create homes that are both ultra-energy efficient and highly liveable,’ said John Dietz, DHA General Manager, Property Provisioning Group.

‘We want to leave a positive legacy for both the community and the environment. There is a strong emphasis on local, low carbon materials, including locally made concrete with a recycled slag content, local granite, and bricks from the original Bowden industrial buildings.’

Located in the revitalised urban precinct of Bowden, The Prince’s Terrace Adelaide is a unique project that demonstrates what can be achieved through sharing information across organisations and even countries.

‘The Prince’s Terrace Adelaide is not only an exemplar of sustainable building techniques, but a great design in a walkable, mixed-use community—which has to be the future of our Australian cities if we want to retain the kind of quality lifestyle which we so much enjoy,’ said Dominic Richards.
