An intensive accredited programme that provides built environment students, apprentices and professionals with a practical understanding of traditional building techniques and knowledge; from timber-framing and stonemasonry skills through to Indigenous perspectives and enduring design philosophies.
Run in partnership with the University of Queensland, the Enduring Design Masterclass will equip participants with a strong, hands-on grounding in the diverse traditional building cultures of Australia. The programme will reconnect them with the enduring design traditions that have stood the test of time to create valuable stores of knowledge for how to build well; both today and for all ages.
To preview some of the content on offer in the Enduring Design Masterclass, please see a summary of our two timber, brick- and stonemasonry workshops below.
Applications for the Enduring Design Masterclass 2022 will soon open here.
Sweden: The Engelsberg Summer School in Classical Architecture
The Engelsberg Summer School in Classical Architecture is a four-week intensive programme taught by leading practitioners and academics of modern classical architecture.
Practical and theoretical modules give participants both taught and hands-on experience, with opportunities for discussion, debate, and learning throughout. The combination of individual projects, group work, and one-to-one support from tutors provide a unique learning experience for students and practitioners of all levels of ability and experience.
Several visiting tutors lead different projects and lectures on various subjects treating applied classical architecture throughout the four weeks of the course. Along with supervised lessons the tutors give presentations and lectures, which includes examples of their own work; something the students of 2019 expressed as being “incredibly inspiring” and a reminder of the direct relevance of classical form to the contemporary design process.
The course offers an exceptional opportunity to learn from leading experts and a diverse range of fellow students. It is a forum for discussion and debate, a chance to develop and improve skills, and will challenge students to think critically and creatively as well as to produce designs that apply learnings and observations made throughout the course.
Portugal: Premio Rafael Manzano Summer School
Study local building traditions architecture in a traditional town in Spain. Among many exciting activities, you will help to compile a catalogue or pattern book, to help preserve the area’s local character. This catalogue will reference the traditional building techniques in the area and show how these can be referenced in new builds.
Students will also work towards putting forward proposals to improve public spaces in the town. The course will also provide the students with a fantastic opportunity to improve their technical drawing and measuring skills.
Students will receive tuition and lectures from local experts in vernacular architecture, and engage in exciting excursions to surrounding sites and developments.
Morocco: Terrachidia Earth Building Workshops
A regular Earth Building and Traditional Architecture Workshop is held in the East of Morocco, which has taken place at historic locations like the El Khorbat ksar.
Participants will be able to learn the traditional building techniques of Morocco directly from local masters and be able to put these techniques into practice in the restoration of the architecture of the location, all contributing to the sustainable development of the region.
At the same time, participants will work in researching, recording, documentation and promoting this heritage and local architecture. As well as the building workshops there are a number of other cultural activities that are included in the programme.
Travelling Scholarships for Architecture Students
There are a number of travelling scholarships open to architecture students in Australia and around the world.
Scholarships are available for both the Prince’s Foundation Summer School and the Engelsberg Summer School. Contact us for more information.
The ADAM Architecture Travel Scholarship provides an opportunity for students or recent graduates to travel abroad to conduct research on an architectural subject of their choosing. The award of £2,000 supports original research in architecture, architectural technology and urban design.
Thanks to the support of Yiangou Architects, INTBAU also recently announced the opening of its biennial £2,000 travel scholarship to encourage the next generation of researchers and practitioners of traditional architecture, and to support research of clear value that would not otherwise be undertaken.
Online: Sustainable Urban Design Course (FREE)
Designed through a partnership between the Prince’s Foundation and the University College of Estate Management, this educational series aims to provide insights into how the adoption of a holistic view of sustainable design and development leads to more resilient urban communities. Land use, ecological factors, mass migration and many other sources of stress are affecting community life.
These factors, combined with the need for job creation, mean that we have to find more sustainable approaches to urbanism.
The ongoing Poundbury development in Dorset, UK, is used as a recurring case study during the series. It is an urban extension of an existing town, Dorchester, which is developed using the principles of architecture and urban planning advocated by Prince Charles in his book A Vision of Britain.
On successful completion of each part of the course you will receive a UCEM certificate of completion for 2 hours of formal CPD. You will be tested with an online quiz at the end of this course. You must achieve 80% or more to successfully complete the course. Additional attempts will be permitted should you not be successful on your first attempt.
