Scotland: Prince's Foundation Summer School


Prince’s Trust Australia will award two scholarships to Australian students to attend the Prince’s Foundation Summer School in the United Kingdom. Students will learn about the sustainable practice of traditional architecture, building and heritage trades and how these can be applied in the built environment today.

What you will learn: Various traditional building skills and crafts like drawing, timber framing, stonemasonry, leaded glasswork, earth building and blacksmithing. The course will consist of lectures, site visits and practical workshops culminating in an intensive design and build exercise.

Location: The Prince’s Foundation headquarters, Dumfries House, Scotland.

Dates: The programme will run for three weeks from the 9th of July - 28th of July 2023.

Requirements: There are no entry requirements for this course and anyone is welcome to apply. The course will particularly benefit architecture and built environment students with an interest in traditional architecture and heritage building. The scholarship covers all tuition and accommodation fees.

Spain: Premio Rafael Manzano Summer School

Portugal: Premio Rafael Manzano Summer School

The Prince's Trust Australia will award two exciting new scholarships worth $3,900 each for Australian students to attend the Barcelona Traditional Architecture Summer School 2023. This summer school will take place in Can Catá, near the city of Barcelona from July 10 to 23 and will be an international drawing and architectural design workshop in which traditional building, architecture and urbanism will be studied to produce a manual for both conservation and the development of new traditional developments in the area.

What you will learn: Local traditional urbanism, architecture and building details will be studied in order to preserve and create new traditional building patterns as a catalogue for the area.

Location: Can Catá, near the city of Barcelona.

Dates: The programme will run for two weeks from July 10 to July 23 2023.

Pakistan: 2023 Natural Building Workshop

Morocco: Terrachidia Earth Building Workshops

The Prince's Trust Australia and INTBAU Australia are seeking participants to take part in a volunteer natural building programme in Pono Eco village, Sindh, south east Pakistan. Two groups of volunteers will be hosted in Pono village later this year. The programme offers international participants a chance to learn about traditional and natural construction techniques with the support and guidance of humanitarian architect, Yasmeen Lari. Participants will be offered a choice of practical workshops, along with additional opportunities to experiment, design and build with these materials.

What you will learn: Traditional and natural construction techniques with the support and guidance of humanitarian architect, Yasmeen Lari.

Location: Pono Eco village, Sindh, south east Pakistan.

Dates:  The workshop has been postponed to a date to be advised later this year.

Netherlands: 'Let's Build a Beautiful City' Traditional Architecture Summer School, Utrecht


The Prince's Trust Australia, INTBAU Australia and INTBAU Netherlands are seeking participants to take part in the 2023 Utrecht 'Let's Build a Beautiful City' Summer School over three weeks in July and August.

What you will learn: Leading architects, academics, and urbanists deliver lectures on urbanism and urban design, sustainability, classical and traditional architecture, and building methods. Studio exercises offer participants the opportunity to develop, or further enhance, their sketching, drawing and watercolor skills. The lectures, studio exercises and excursions will be put to practical use in a number of design projects ranging from individual buildings to larger urban spaces. The course culminates with a final design project where participants work together to design and exhibit a masterplan for a potential future community.

Location: Utrecht, the Netherlands

Dates:  July 17th - August 3th, 2023

Requirements: There are no entry requirements for this course and anyone is welcome to apply. The course will particularly benefit architecture and built environment students with an interest in traditional architecture and heritage building. The scholarship covers all tuition fees, however accommodation and travel will need to be organised by the student. Accommodation is available through the Summer School for a discounted rate of 600 Euros for the duration of the programme.

England and Sweden: Cambridge Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture Summer School

England: Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture Summer School

Scholarship positions are available for the Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture's annual Summer School, which provides an unparalleled formation in the history and practice of traditional architecture in one five-week course.

What you will learn: Classical history and theory in on-site lectures, as well as the techniques and methods of sketching, measured drawing, hand draughtsmanship, and watercolouring in an immersive studio environment. Artists and architects lead foundational workshops, helping students form their hands in traditional drawing practices.

Location: Students stay at the UNESCO World Heritage site Engelsberg Iron Works set in the idyllic landscape of southern Sweden, outside of historic Stockholm in the first weeks. During the second part of the programme, students stay at Downing College, the University of Cambridge’s ‘Enlightenment College’ with nineteenth-century buildings designed by William Wilkins and twentieth-century additions by Quinlan and Francis Terry.

Dates:  Sunday, 2 July through Saturday, 5 August 2023

Requirements: We welcome applications from university-level students and early career professionals (graduating within the past 5 years) of any nationality or background. While we expect most applications to be from students of architecture and architectural history, other applicants able to show serious engagement with classical architecture will be considered. Be sure to communicate how this programme will help your professional trajectory in your personal statement.
